Competency-Based Practical Learning can be more effective in transforming communities by providing relevant, applicable skills, fostering economic and social development, and enhancing individual and community resilience. Theoretical learning, while valuable, often lacks the immediate applicability and engagement that practical learning provides. It can be more abstract and less connected to the daily realities of learners, making it harder for them to see the relevance of their education and how it can be applied to improve their lives and communities. Therefore, I support the adoption of Competency-Based Practical Learning (CBPL) in community development because it focuses on equipping individuals with tangible skills and knowledge that can be directly applied in real-world scenarios.
This approach (Competency-Based Practical Learning) can be
particularly transformative for communities compared to theoretical learning
for several reasons:
(1) It ensures that learners acquire skills that are
immediately relevant and applicable to their daily lives and community needs.
This direct application can lead to immediate improvements in areas such as
healthcare, agriculture, and business because Learners are trained to address
specific challenges within their communities, fostering innovation and
practical solutions to local problems.
(2) Practical skills make individuals more employable and
better prepared for the job market. Vocational training in fields like
carpentry, plumbing, and IT can directly lead to job creation and economic
development. With practical skills, individuals are better equipped to start
and sustain their own businesses, contributing to the local economy and
reducing poverty.
(3) Competency-Based Practical Learning develops Local
Expertise within the communities which reduces over reliance on external
experts. The building of local capacity and resilience enables communities to
better manage their own development. Skilled individuals can improve essential
services such as healthcare, education, and infrastructure, enhancing overall
quality of life.
Practical learning is often more engaging than theoretical instruction. Hands-on activities can increase student interest, retention, and understanding. Practical tasks provide immediate feedback, allowing learners to correct mistakes and improve their skills in real-time. Competency-Based Practical Learning has a Cultural and Contextual Relevance with specific Solutions because it can be tailored to the specific cultural and environmental context of a community, making the learning experience more relevant and effective. Engaging community members in the learning process ensures that the skills and knowledge being developed are in line with local needs and priorities.
I believe that Competency-Based Practical Learning can also improve
confidence and individual Empowerment because through gaining practical skills,
individuals’ confidence and sense of agency, is boosted which is crucial for
mental health and wellbeing. Practical projects often require collaboration,
fostering a sense of community and mutual support among learners.
